The Story Behind Our Name
In the Greek legend, the Gordian Knot was the name given to a complex tangle of rope tied by Gordius, the ancient king of Phrygia. According to prophecy, whoever could undo the knot was to rule Asia. Many tried and failed. The knot was hopelessly stuck: it was speculated that perhaps the ends had been spliced together or there were multiple pieces of rope.
No one could solve the undoing of this knot. Then Alexander the Great came along. He accepted the challenge and tried his hand. He stepped back, eyed the knot, and then suddenly drew his sword and in a single stroke he cleaved through and unraveled the knot.
